How to use the vents to control heat of potrable charcoal grill.
My grate just died after about 10 years of heavy use. Rather then buy a replacement grate, I wasn't thinking and just purchased a whole new portable charcoal grill.
The next day I purchased a replacement grate online from the weber grill propane folks and that transaction was very smooth as has always been the case with Amazon.
So now I have two functioning portable charcoal grill.. It seems to me that the food sits closer to the charcoal on this then it does full sized grills, so heat has never been an issue with mine.
Although the portable charcoal grill may loose it's heat a little faster as you can't really make a pile of charcoal or stack the brickets very much.
I actually think it is easier to burn things on this portable charcoal grill then others, and learning how to use the vents to control heat is something you will need to do.
Honestly though, this is the only portable charcoal grill I have any real experience with and I love the portability and often wrap it in a trash bag and take it to state parks for 'eating out'.
My only complaint is they have changed the handles to plastic on the new models which now require mits to handle during the process.
The old model had wood handles and I never needed a mit to take the cover off and check my food.

How to portable charcoal grill make burger
How to portable charcoal grill make burger
Start with fresh ground chuck. Chuck is the most flavorful type of ground beef, and comes from a single cut of beef. Plain "ground beef" can include meat from all over the animal.
Make sure the chuck has a fat content of at least 15 to 22 percent to ensure juiciness. If you prefer your burgers well done, ask your butcher for a higher fat content. This will allow you to cook them more without drying them out.
Chill the beef well before forming patties. Wash your hands well, then form the patties.
Make each patty by forming about half a pound of ground chuck into a tight ball about the size of a baseball. Firmly press ball into a flat cake, first between your hands, then onto a clean cutting board.
Use a spatula or other straight-edged tool to "pull in" the sides of the patty so that they remain together and tight.Form patties about 1/2- to 3/4-inch thick. Make the diameter about 1/2 inch larger than the bun to allow for shrinkage.Build a hot fire in the portable charcoal grill. Lightly oil the bars with vegetable oil - pour oil onto a paper towel, then hold the towel with tongs to wipe the oil onto the portable charcoal grill bars.
Season the burgers on both sides with salt and pepper. Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper give the best flavor.Place the burgers on the portable charcoal grill over direct heat. Cook about 3 to 4 minutes per side, turning once. Do not press down on the burgers with the spatula during cooking - this only squeezes out the juices, encourages flame-ups and dries out the burger.
Check doneness by peeking inside a patty with a spatula, or use an instant-read food thermometer inserted into the center of the patty. (See Tips for recommended temperature.)
Serve on fresh buns with any toppings you prefer: cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, onion, pickles and condiments such as ketchup, mayonnaise or mustard.

How to use portable charcoal grill.
How to use portable charcoal grill.
Just fired this little guy up for the first time today and WOW! It cooked fast and even really awesome job. And with the hickory chips I added it evenly smoked my sirloin burgers to perfection! Must be the small dome shape that just works wonders.
To break it in I used frozen sirloin hamburgers from Sam's Club. You can actually fit five of those large burgers on this tiny grill perfectly. When done I justed closed the vents top and bottom and it put out the coals for use later.
My large stainless portable charcoal grill is now retired. If I'm entertaining I'd much rather have two or three of these little Smokey Joe grills than one large weber grill propane, no kidding.
And three Smokey Joe Silver grills cost far less than that monster did. Oh and btw I'm sure it would be a great camping grill too.
